    Multi cables

    One cable for every connector

USB-C, Lightning, micro-USB and USB-A still share most desks and bags. Match each plug to its port, then see how one multi cable covers them all.

Match the plug to the port

    Why USB-C is taking over

    1. 28 December 2024

USB-C becomes the common charging port in the EU for phones, tablets, cameras, headphones, earbuds, speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice and handheld consoles.

    2. 28 April 2026

Laptops follow. Devices can also be sold without a charger, so a good cable matters more than ever.

    Charging and data cables

Not all USB-C cables are equal

Two cables can look the same and behave very differently. Test the power, see what an eMarker does, lock the data on a public charger and let the magnets tidy up.

    The cable tester

Pick a cable rating and plug it in. The display shows what flows through it.

    20 V x 3 A. Any USB-C cable can carry this, no eMarker needed.

    20 V x 5 A. Needs a 5 A cable with an eMarker chip.

    48 V x 5 A with USB PD 3.1. Needs a 240 W cable with an eMarker chip.

    What is an eMarker?

A tiny chip in the plug that tells the charger how much current the cable can safely carry. Without it, the charger stays at 3 A.

Watts say nothing about data speed. Many charging cables move data at USB 2.0 speed, 480 Mbps.

    Juice jacking: lock the data

A public USB port can, in rare cases, be used to reach a phone's data. The FCC advises using your own charger, or a cable that only charges. Try the data lock:

Data lock on: power flows, data is blocked.

    Magnets beat knots

Built-in magnets roll the cable into a neat coil, so it comes out of the bag untangled.
